Virginia Beach chooses Securly’s 360 Cloud solution to safeguard its 70,000 students.
SAN JOSE, CALIF.
Securly, the Silicon Valley-based student safety pioneers, announced that Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) has chosen Securly’s 360 Cloud solution to ensure device management and student safety across its 1:1 Chromebook environment on-campus and off-campus.
In the winter of 2019, Virginia Beach put out an RFP for providers of the following services, including on-site internet filtering, off-site internet filtering, parent engagement, student safety, and classroom management. The district, which had previously used Securly for some filtering and security needs, wanted the benefit of receiving multiple solutions from a single provider.
Through a competitive RFP process, Virginia Beach City Public Schools chose Securly because of its unique ability to provide both seamless cloud-based web-filtering on a district-wide level and end-to-end student safety – even as children spend more time learning from home.
With nearly 70,000 students across its 86 schools, Virginia Beach selected Securly’s 360 Cloud suite of solutions. Securly will provide Virginia Beach with a cloud-based web filter that includes bullying and self-harm alerts for devices on-campus and off-campus, Auditor, its student safety monitoring and alert system for email, Google Docs, and Drive, Tipline, designed for reporting tips anonymously through email, phone, or via the Tipline app, and 24, a live team of highly-trained analysts that perform risk assessments on all flagged activity and contact schools 24/7 for high-risk activities.
Securly had already begun providing Virginia Beach access to Securly Home, which lets parents stay involved by letting them view their children’s online activity on school devices, receive safety alerts, and receive weekly emails with activity summaries. Additionally, parents get access to the free Securly Home app, which provides additional functionality to 1:1 devices brought home including customizable web filtering, offline scheduling, an internet Pause button, and more. “We love having a solution that lets parents control internet access at home,” says Shane Snedecor, Information Security Manager for VBCPS. “The capabilities you can give parents are fantastic.” Securly Home is currently used by over 30,000 district parents.
Virginia Beach teachers will be benefiting by receiving Securly Classroom, a classroom management solution that lets teachers manage students’ school-issued devices, including Chromebooks, Windows, and Macs. Securly Classroom allows teachers to control tabs and lock sites on student devices, monitor student activity with thumbnail views of desktops, and push URLs to all devices. Securly Classroom works equally at managing in-person teaching as it does for distance learning for keeping students focused and on-task.
“One thing that stood out to us about VBCPS was their heart and dedication to their students,” says Rich Watson, Securly’s SVP of Customer Success. “Thanks to their “Be Social. Be Smart. Be Safe.” campaign, which teaches digital citizenship and best practices, particularly around social media, it’s not only encouraging them academically, it’s also teaching students to become responsible offline and online. It’s a privilege to serve such a community.”
Looking forward to the next term, Snedecor knows that he has a technology partner he can count on. “The whole implementation has been painless,” says Snedecor. “No matter what the Fall brings us in terms of remote learning, we know our Securly solutions will keep our students safe and learning.”
