The Lafayette Parish NAACP is pushing back against the recent request for proposals sent out by the Guillory administration.
In a release, the NAACP unit #6060 is recommending all churches, organizations, non-profits and community-based organization not turn in a Request for Proposal (RFP) to the Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) to operate parks on the Northside of Lafayette.
“By turning in an RFP, it will further Mayor-President Josh Guillory’s attack on the Northside of Lafayette, our children, our organizations, and culture,” a release states. “We further ask that the community continue to support our efforts by attending the August 4th City Council meeting.”
The Lafayette Consolidated Government sent out the Request for Proposals on Wednesday for the operation and maintenance of four area recreation centers in the parish. The rec centers are on the north side of the parish and are set to close.
They include:
- Domingue Recreation Center 901 Mudd Avenue Lafayette, LA 70501
- George Bowles Activity Center 120 Dawn Street Lafayette, LA 70501
- Heymann Park Recreation Center 1500 S Orange Street, Lafayette, LA 70501J
- Carlton James Activity Center 710 Aster Drive Lafayette, LA 70506
The RFP asks that all four recreation centers be operated as recreation centers and continue to serve their original intent.
The NAACP is hoping to stop the closing of the centers and the layoffs that are also expected as a result.
“Our city is being divided by Mayor-President Josh Guillory and we must stand together to fight for fairness and equity for all. The NAACP encourages the community to not participate in the demise of the closing of our four recreation centers, the direct dismantling of the 37 families and the countless children living in North Lafayette.”
