Elk Grove Village Trustees To Award Olympic-Bound Team Sponsorship Thursday

Elk Grove Village trustees expect to meet and award a $100,000 contract to the governing body of a U.S. Olympic-bound team at a special village board meeting Thursday.

The initial plan announced at the July 7 village board meeting was to hold a special village board meeting July 16 to review video presentations from U.S. teams who responded to a village request for proposals (RFP). A choice on which team to sponsor would be made at a July 23 meeting of trustees.

Village officials confirmed Wednesday, however, a vote on awarding the sponsorship would be made at tomorrow’s meeting.

Mayor Craig Johnson said the choice was made to take a vote at Thursday’s meeting to ensure board members were fully in compliance with the Illinois Open Meetings Act after the Journal raised concerns.

Team videos are expected to showcase how teams would market the village and its nearly six-square mile business park, whose marketing slogan is “Makers Wanted.”

Late last month, 4Front, the village’s marketing firm for the project, began soliciting RFPs from U.S. sports governing bodies for the “Elk Grove Village, Makers Wanted, Sponsoring The American Dream” $100,000 sponsorship award.

Johnson said the RFP generated a strong response with 12 U.S. teams, including wrestling, fencing, archery, judo, track and field, triathlon, artistic swimming, water polo, diving, sailing, weight lifting, and softball all responding to the RFP.

4Front was awarded a $315,000 contract earlier this month including $100,000 for the team sponsorship, $100,000 for 4Front’s fee and $115,000 for television commercial production and ad placement unrelated to the “Makers Wanted, Sponsoring The American Dream” marketing promotion.

The village has a history of sponsoring sports for its Makers Wanted marketing campaigns since 2013. Those efforts included sponsorships with the Chicago Cubs and with ESPN for the Makers Wanted Bahamas Bowl. Prior to 2013, the village hosted and sponsored the Tour of Elk Grove, a multi-day staged international bike race with the same certification by the International Cycling Union as the Tour de France.

Thursday’s special village board meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
