US utility AES Corp (NYSE:AES) is seeking to award contracts for up to 1 GW of new renewable energy for its customers in PJM, inclusive of a strategic alliance with Google.

AES has issued a request for proposals (RFPs) to purchase energy, environmental attributes, ancillary services and capacity from newly-built renewable energy plants in the PJM area. Eligible projects include solar, either as standalone systems or coupled with battery storage, new and repowered onshore and offshore wind farms and other new carbon-free energy sources. Battery storage projects will not be allowed to participate on their own.

The deadline for submitting expressions of interest is June 26, while RfP submissions are due by July 22. Winners will sign a power purchase agreement (PPA) with AES Solutions Management LLC, a unit of AES.

The projects to be considered must enter commercial operation between January 1, 2020, and December 31, 2023.

“Innovation in creating customized solutions is one of the core factors we’ll be evaluating in a potential provider,” AES said.

AES and Google formed a 10-year partnership at the end of last year under which the electricity producer will use Google’s cloud-based technology in order to speed up the expansion and adoption of clean energy. Helping the search engine giant meet its clean energy targets is also part of the plan.
