Scugog inks deal to bring pro shop back to Port Perry arena

Scugog has reached an agreement with TSO Teamwear that will see the local apparel company operate a pro shop, with skate-sharpening service, at the Reach Street arena.

SCUGOG — Skate-sharpening service will soon be available at the Scugog Arena after councillors endorsed a pro shop agreement with TSO Teamwear.

In a report presented to council on June 15, staff outlined a proposal that would see TSO Teamwear pay $320 a month to rent a 220-square-foot space between the two ice pads at the Reach Street facility. The business already currently occupies the arena space, through an existing facility rental contract, to sell apparel.

That space was used as a pro shop to provide skate-sharpening services to community ice user groups starting in 2007, but the operation has since ceased. After receiving inquiries over the last few months wondering if the space could be used as a pro shop again, the township issued a request for proposal on March 11, which closed on April 14. TSO Teamwear submitted the only proposal.

A pro shop “service has been missed at the (Scugog Community and Recreation Centre), with many patrons of the facility surprised that sharpening is not offered. (With) TSO Teamwear providing skate-sharpening service, this will fill a community service void,” said the staff report, penned by Shawna Cornish, Scugog’s manager of recreation and culture.

TSO Teamwear will also continue to also provide apparel to the North Durham Warriors Minor Hockey Association, the Scugog Men’s Hockey League, Scugog Women’s Hockey League, North Durham Blades and Central Ontario Wolves triple-A organization.

The minimum pro shop hours of operation, based on the facility operations, are from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Those hours are from Sept. 1 to April 30.

“The option exists to operate on reduced hours during the months of May through August or due to COVID-19, with the potential of reduced ice rentals due to registration numbers,” wrote Cornish.

The contract with TSO Teamwear will be a one-year pact with a two-year renewal option. The monthly rent will be $320 — totalling $2,560 over the eight months of a typical season — which was the minimum monthly payment the township said it would accept in its RFP.

Scugog councillors endorsed the agreement, but did not discuss the report.
