ProCure Treatment Centers Recognized Among Indiana Companies to Watch

Bloomington, Ind. (August 20, 2008) – Bloomington’s ProCure Treatment Centers, Inc. (ProCure) is one of 50 companies selected as an Indiana Company to Watch, an award that recognizes the top privately held second-stage companies of Indiana. ProCure, a developer of proton therapy cancer treatment centers, will be recognized at an awards ceremony Aug. 27 in Indianapolis.

“This is a significant honor and we are very pleased,” said John Cameron, Ph.D., founder of ProCure. “We established ProCure to bring this superior cancer treatment to more patients and we are realizing that vision, one proton therapy center at a time.”

Dr. Cameron founded ProCure after being part of the development team that opened the country’s third proton treatment center in Bloomington. Proton therapy is an advanced form of radiation therapy to treat cancer without many of the short and long term side effects associated with conventional radiation therapy. There are now only five proton centers operating in the United States.

Of the 3,800 mid-sized Indiana companies, 420 companies were nominated for the Companies to Watch program. The field was then narrowed down to 50 recipients. Companies honored range from traditional businesses involved in manufacturing, financial services and warehousing, information technology and telecommunications, to high-tech companies in the life sciences.

ProCure partners with radiation oncology practices and hospitals to develop and operate proton therapy centers. ProCure’s first proton therapy center is being built in Oklahoma City, Okla. and is scheduled to open in 2009.  ProCure has three additional proton therapy centers under development in Florida, Illinois and Michigan.

In addition to developing proton therapy centers, ProCure created the Training and Development Center (TDC), the first facility in the world dedicated exclusively to proton therapy training. It opened in Bloomington in March 2008. The TDC is designed just like ProCure’s full-scale proton therapy center and simulates all aspects of the treatment without using actual protons.  The TDC provides clinical, technical, interpersonal and administrative training for the medical and administrative staff who will operate ProCure’s proton therapy centers across the country.

ProCure recently secured an additional $35 million round of equity funding and employs more than 65 people – a number which will increase as new ProCure proton therapy centers are built, each offering 100 full-time jobs.

Indiana Companies to Watch is a collaboration among the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, through its Small Business Development Centers, Purdue University and the Edward Lowe Foundation. Qualifications for the award include: six to 150 full-time employees, $750,000 to $100 million in annual revenue or working capital, and demonstrating the intent and capacity to grow based on employee or sales growth. Other notable strengths include exceptional companies with $5 million to $100 million in annual sales, entrepreneurial leadership and a sustainable competitive advantage.
