A group of leading community radiation oncologists and ProCure Treatment Centers announced that they will develop a state-of-the-art, 55,000-square-foot proton treatment center in Broward or Palm Beach County, Fla. with site selection near completion. The American Cancer Society estimates there were more than 101,920 new cases of cancer in Florida in 2008. About 60 percent of those patients (61,152) will receive radiation therapy at some point during treatment and, using conservative estimates, about 30 percent (18,345) of those patients could benefit from proton therapy.

This new facility, which will have the capacity to treat as many as 1,500 cancer patients a year, is expected to open within 26 months of breaking ground.
