Public Hearing for Illinois Proton Therapy Center

Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board to Hear Public Comment for Proposed Proton Therapy Center of Central DuPage Hospital

WHAT: The Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board (IHFPB) will hold a public hearing March 5 for the proposed $140 million, 58,000-square-foot Proton Therapy Center of Central DuPage Hospital.

WHY:

More than 10,000 cancer patients in Illinois could benefit from proton therapy each year. Unlike traditional radiation therapy, proton therapy is a highly advanced form of radiation treatment that can be precisely targeted to the tumor, allowing patients to receive higher, more effective doses, and greatly reducing damage to healthy tissue and organs near the tumor. Research shows proton therapy causes fewer side effects than traditional radiation therapy, diminishes the chances of secondary tumors and improves patients’ quality of life.1,2  The IHFPB is scheduled to consider the project for final approval at its April board meeting. With private financing, building design and equipment secured, the center could break ground soon after receiving approval from the IHFPB. The center will open to treat patients in 2010.
